Vienna is the capital and most populous city of Austria. It is one of nine federal states in the country. Vienna has just over two million inhabitants, and its larger metropolitan area has a population of nearly 2.9 million, making up almost one-third of the country's population. It serves as the cultural, economic, and political center of Austria. Vienna is the fifth-largest city by population in the European Union and the most populous city on the Danube River. Major tourist attractions in Vienna include the imperial palaces of the Hofburg Imperial Palace and Schönbrunn Palace, as well as the Wiener Riesenrad in the Prater. Additionally, cultural highlights in the city include the Burgtheater, the Vienna State Opera, the Lipizzaner horses at the Spanish Riding School, and the Vienna Boys' Choir. Vienna is also home to over 100 art museums, collectively attracting over eight million visitors annually.
